"Ferrari" (2023) Review

The talented Adam Driver plays Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz appears as his wife Laura, during a short period leading up the anticipated bankruptcy of his manufacturing company for racing cars named the Ferrari. Determined to save his declining enterprise, Enzo embarks on risky manoeuvres such as the 1,000 mile Mille Miglia road race that his team participates in. However, the plot thickens as Laura discovers Enzo's secret: Piero was his illegitimate son with another woman named Lina Lardi who is portrayed in the story by Shailene Woodley.

Adapted from Brock Yates's book "Enzo Ferrari: In the summer of 1957, Troy Kennedy Martin wrote “The Man, the Cars, the races,” which is a short glimpse of Enzo Ferrari’s life. Essentially, this is not just a typical biopic because it acts as a study of Enzo’s woes that he tries to overcome in an effort to save not only his career but also his name. Enzo emerges as one of the imperfect husbands who has no qualms about infidelities but is guilty due to the secret he has with his son Piero. Among these characters, Laura is one of the most notable, having to deal with emotional pain while managing her employer’s financial matters.



The screenplay excellently depicts the shifting relationship between Enzo and Laura which will keep viewers engrossed emotionally. Although the Mille Miglia race scenes give exciting spectacles, Lina becomes weak when she interacts with Zono, while Piero appears like a plot.



He plays the role of Adam Driver who exudes charisma combined with an inner core. Penelope Cruz glows in it, radiating life and truth in every screen moment. Casting Shailene Woodley feels a little out of place as well, and she might deliver an unconvincing Italian accent. The supporting actors played by Sarah Gadon, Patrick Dempsey, and Jack O’Connell were really great. Despite that, they were all utilized optimally, with some being wasted.

Although some parts are slightly unevenly edited, an eerie and brutal car chase with gory details is totally unsuitable for a Hollywood blockbuster about cops and robbers as usual in such Michael Mann films. However, it does not rely on the visual style for creating atmosphere, like Mann did in his previous films. The movie has a running time of two hours and ten minutes, but remains extremely engaging and heartfelt, featuring remarkable performances of Driver and Cruz that make this over long film stand out from
