South Korean Action Movie Phantom(2023) Review

After “Believer”, Lee Hae-young brings another patriotism movie that concerns with Korea’s freedom movement of the thirties. Directors easily combine film noir, action and shades of the handmaiden containing warring lesbian heroines which followed up the age of shadows.

The movie is set in 1933 Korea occupied by Japan and focuses on Park Chakyung, a phantom spy fighting against colonialism. The mission turns sour when activist Yoon Nan-young fails to assassinate the new Japanese resident-general as her unit prepares for the hit. Nan-young gets a deadly hit by bullet and therefore, Cha-kyung turns completely bloody, making their mission useless.

Therefore, Cha-kyung is nabbed by Kaito who was the captain of the Japanese security forces. With one of her coworker Baek-ho, chief Cheon the codebreaker, one secretary Yuriko and another policeman Junji Muramaya from Japan, Cha-Gyng has to endure to tell about others, but not about herself. With increasing tension, she wrestles whether or not to expose herself, keep quiet or team up with the suspects in order to prevent the Japanese army.
At its onset, the movie presents an almost black-white visual world where rainy women who wear trenches and pass coded messages in hidden corners. The middle section of the film is however characterized by waning tension. It includes confusing two-dimensional characters and a delayed “whodunnit” that fails to merit the previous anticipation.

At this point, the movie picks up speed only to climax into a wonderful fight at a hillock hotel. Their true selves come out as the clashes between the Koreans, the Japanese, allies and enemies become fiercer. The audience also feels close to Cha-kyung’s path and attaches themselves to her. Significantly, Yuriko becomes a noteworthy protagonist.4

Visual aspect of the film uses luxurious hotel rooms, old cinema, and dark tunnels; polished cinematography and attention to detail in production design contribute to its dark and tense mood of visual aspect of the film. With Korean cinema moving towards portraying strong women, “Phantom” presents heroine, fearless female protestors fighting cliche opposition. Patriotism is a theme covered by the film with conversations about dedication and love for nation, being much deeper than usual nationalistic productions.

Though not the leading star, Park So-dam glows, injecting the personality she portrays with an amalgam of wit and aggression. The casting of Lee Ha-nee as Cha-kyung is remarkable as she perfectly balances accuracy and delicacy in her depiction. Esom plays a small, but powerful part of Cha-kyoung’s lover, Yoon Nan-yong. This character evokes the feel of Marlene Dietrich.
Despite a mid-film dip, "Phantom" successfully builds tension before delivering a conclusion that goes beyond historical expectations, urging resistance and emancipation.
